Roosters

Roosters and Unwanted Chickens

Most Council areas in Melbourne do not allow roosters.  Change in personal circumstances can mean chickens can no longer be cared for, or you may not be in a positon to keep a chicken that is no longer laying.

Craig's Farm will take roosters and chickens, they can be delivered any time during our opening hours.

What happens to Roosters or Unwanted Chickens?

No chickens are killed at Craig's farm.  Where possible homes are found.  Pure breeds roosters are easier to find homes for than cross breeds, as breeders can be looking for replacement roosters.  Chickens that are healthy and laying are easier to find homes for than those no longer laying, or with a health problem.  Roosters and chickens we cannot rehome are taken to market.

We do not offer a collection service, swap, or provide payment.

What Happens to Roosters or Unwanted Chickens

No roosters or chickens are killed at Craig's farm (unless required because they are in pain)

Chickens that are healthy and laying will find a new home.

Chickens or roosters that are unhealthy will not be rehomed.

Pure breeds roosters that are 'true to type' are much easier to find homes for than cross breeds, as breeders can be looking for replacement roosters or new blood-lines.  It can be easier to find homes for roosters hatched from our fertile eggs as we know the blood-lines.  The physical qualities of a rooster is usually more important than their temperament.  However, we sometimes rehome cross breed roosters with good temperaments to people who have acreage and want a rooster to care for their hens.

The reality is that the usual number of hens to roosters is 3 to 1 (or less), otherwise the more dominant roosters will kill the less dominant.  For this reason it is impossible to rehome every rooster.  Be wary of anyone who claims they are rehoming all roosters.

Roosters that cannot be rehomed are sold for meat or taken to market.  It is important to remember that these birds have lived a much longer and much happier and healthier life than the meat chickens most often provided at supermarkets or other food outlets.

Roosters of the breeds we keep are not suitable for 'cock-fighting' as they are not game birds.

Sexing of Chickens

Mixed breed layers are vent sexed at a day old - accuracy is around 95%.

We do not vent sex pure breed chicks as the accuracy is lower than for mixed breed layers.

Pure breeds are sexed from 8 weeks of age, depending on the breed.

At a day old the following breeds are sexed:

- Legbar (this breed is 'autosexing' - girls look different to boys)

At 8 weeks the following breeds are sexed:

- Ancona

- Andalusian

- Barnevelder

- Leghorn

- Rhode Island

- Pekin

- Welsummer

- Wyandotte

At 12 weeks the following breeds are sexed:

- Australorp

- Langshan

- Orpington

- Plymouth Rock

- Sussex

At 18 weeks the follwing breeds are sexed:

- Araucana

- Silky

If you choose to purchase chickens a couple of weeks before the age we sex them you can ask for advice to increase the chance of choosing a girl - but we cannot 'guarantee' a female if you purchase before the dates specified.

Guaranteed female:

Sexing of females is 95% accurate (or more - depending on the age and breed of chicken).  We 'guarantee' sexed females, so if you are unlucky enough to end up with a rooster you can return him and we will provide a refund (please hold onto your receipt as not all chicks are sold as 'sexed females')
