- All commercial layers are sexed at a day old.
- Pure breed chickens are vent sexed by a chickens sexer at a day old unless otherwise stated.
- Eggs take 3 weeks to hatch, then it's another 8 weeks before chickens can go outside, but are not old enough to join adult chickens.
- If you already have chickens, please let us know what you have so we can ensure the additions to your flock will be suitable.
Pullets - 8 weeks+
Chickens are able to live outside, as long as they have a coop with shelter from the elements, from 8 weeks of age.
Commercial Layers (Hylines)
8 week old pure bred sexed chicks off heat available $25 each
16 weeks old
Cross Breed (Isa Brown x Leghorn x Australorp) (sexed female and vaccinated)
Chickens usually start laying at between 20 weeks (for commercial layers) and 32 weeks (large breeds, such as Light Sussex, Plymouth Rocks and Orpingtons). Weather and other environmental conditions can also impact this.
Point of lay chickens (apart from commercial layers) are not often available as most chickens are sold before they reach this age. When available they will be listed here and on our facebook page.
Day Old to 7 week old chickens
Chicks need to be kept inside, under a heat light, until they are 4 weeks of age. From 4 weeks to 8 weeks chicks must remain inside (in warm weather they may be put outside from 6 weeks)
Day olds - Finished for this season
Week olds through to 8 week olds available
- Light Sussex
- Buff Orpington
- Rhode Island Red
- Bantam Australorp
If you are interested in particular chickens listed, it is worth a call to 'hold' chickens until you arrive to ensure they are not sold beforehand. There is no obligation to purchase these chickens if you change your mind once you have seen them.
Unfortunately we are not able to 'hold' chickens for more than a couple of days or 'grow them to order'. This is because chickens need to be housed with others of the same age, so 'holding' chickens means compromising living conditions of our other chickens.
