Attributes

  • Have excellent feed to egg ratio.
  • White egg layers
  • Lay a very large egg, although they are not a very large chicken (I most often get double-yolkers from these breeds)
  • Have a long laying season compared to other pure breeds
  • Due to their light body weight they can fly easily, however, all chickens can fly, if they want (or are scared)
  • Have a reputation is being 'flighty' because they can move faster than other breeds, if they want (due to body weight), but are as friendly as any other breed.
  • As a group, the most under-rated and under-promoted breeds of chicken (if researching via the internet)

Mediterranean Chicken Breeds

Anconca Chicken

Anconca Chicken are not as well known as some other breeds, but are often requested by those who want an attractive or unusual looking chicken that lays well. Anconas lay a large egg for a medium sized chicken and have distinctive colouring as chicks - both black and red chicks have red in them as chicks, but grow to be red or black as adults. They can be friendly, but you need to spend time with them, otherwise they will be a little stand-offish.

  • Colours: Red (left), Black (right)
  • Broody: Rarely
  • Eggs per week: 5-6
  • Sexed at: 8 weeks old

Andalusian Chicken

Andalusian Chicken are not as well known as some other breeds, but are popular due to their blue colour and the fact that they lay well. Andalusians lay a large egg for a medium sized chicken. It is a little bigger in size than the Leghorns, Anconas and Campines and I have found them to be a little friendlier than these breeds.

  • Colours: Blue
  • Broody: Rarely
  • Eggs per week: 5-6
  • Sexed at: 8 weeks old

Campine Chicken

Campine Chicken are quite rare, so are not as well known as some other breeds, but are requested by those wanting an attractive chicken that lays well. Campines lay a large white egg for a medium sized chicken. The chicks have distinctive colouring. They can be friendly, but you need to spend time with them, otherwise they will be a little stand-offish.

  • Colours: Silver
  • Broody: Rarely
  • Eggs per week: 5-6
  • Sexed at: 12 weeks old

Leghorn Chicken

The CSIRO white Leghorn chickens I have are bred to be prolific layers as they were bred as commercial layers. They lay a very large egg although they are only a medium sized chicken. My chickens only went off the lay for 3 weeks this year, so are excellent if you are looking for chickens that will lay throughout the year.

Brown, black and exchequer Leghorns also lay a large egg for a medium sized chicken. The exchequer Leghorns lay better than the brown and black Leghorns, but not as well as the CSIRO white Leghorns.

Most pure breeds will lay longer than a commercial layer, because they don’t lay as many eggs each year. The CSIRO white Leghorns will have a shorter laying life than other pure breeds, because they lay more each year.

Many people remember Leghorns from the 1960s (or earlier) as it was a popular backyard chicken. Of course, Disney’s Foghorn was a Leghorn.

  • Colours: Black, Exchequer, Brown, White
  • Broody: Rarely
  • Eggs per week: 5-6
  • Sexed at: 8 weeks old
