Orpington Chicken

Orpington Chicken are one of the breeds we are asked for most often as they have an excellent online profile that tells people they are a friendly chicken that lays well. This is true, but there are other breeds that lay better and other breeds that are friendlier. Their appearance and buff colour also makes them popular. Online research seems to lead some to not realise how large these chickens are. Although they lay a large egg, their feed-to-egg ratio is low as they are a large bird. Some people use them as dual purpose birds due to their size. Due to their popularity these are often sold as fertilised eggs and day old chicks, meaning we rarely have supply of these at an age when they are old enough to join an established flock. We plan to increase numbers for future seasons. We occasionally are able to source older birds and list on the website under ‘Chickens available’ when we have them.

The barred Plymouth Rocks are most popular, although white Plymouth Rocks are also available. These chickens are popular as dual purpose birds due to their size. Bantam Plymouth Rocks are popular among those not wanting a very large bird as the bantams lay a reasonable sized egg and are similar in size to some of the medium sized chickens.
